Billionaire brawl: Brilliant or barbaric?

Two of the world’s most well-known billionaires, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, recently joked about the possibility of fighting each other in a cage match.

Yup, you read that right. Fighting each other in a cage match.

It all started with a (yet another) random tweet from Elon Musk saying that he was “up for a cage match” with Mark Zuckerberg, to which @Zuck (Zuckerberg on Instagram) casually shared to his 12 million followers with the reply-caption “Send me location”.

@ElonMusk soon responded (on Twitter, of course) to @Zuck, suggesting a location (The Vegas Octagon, the fenced-in competition mat where the UFC fights are held), and even let his followers in on his ‘secret move’: “I call [it] the Walrus, where I just lie on top of my opponent and do nothing”, later tweeting out short videos of... (you guessed it) walruses.

The exchange quickly went viral, with many taking sides and showing support for their preferred champion: we saw a wave of memes, fake advertisements in the style of UFC posters, and even sports journalists that began to weigh-in and express their excitement for the opportunity to cover the high-profile match.

While there is not yet a set date for the cage fight, and we aren’t even quite sure if it will actually happen… there are of course many differing opinions surrounding this whole exchange.

Some are calling the possible cage fight a waste of time and an inconsiderate display and lack of regard for many of the real issues going on in the world.

Others are calling it light-hearted and entertaining, and are excited to see two high-profile nerds act tough on live TV, especially with the recent launch of Meta’s Twitter rival, ‘Threads’.

What do you think - is the possibility of this billionaire cage match absolutely brilliant or completely barbaric?

The Debate Showdown

Side A: Billionaires have a responsibility to use their platforms to raise awareness to more important issues than cage matches and silly ego battles

  • There are real issues going on in the world – famines, wars, global warming, etc ─ and it is inconsiderate to draw attention away from REAL issues. The whole world is talking about a stupid cage match between a bunch of billionaires, when there’s way more important sh!t we should be focusing our attention and efforts on.

  • These two are supposed to be two of the richest, most successful business men on earth. A cage match is extremely inconsiderate to their investors. Imagine investing in one of their companies and having them act like this in public? It’s not a good look.

  • Let’s call this what it is: a media money-grab. Even if there is a charity component to this, these two could solve so many world issues by directly donating a small fraction of their net-worth without hosting a whole cage fight. Neither one of them have any experience worth getting them into a ring... they’re just famous people doing stupid stuff for attention. Why do we keep giving these people attention?

Side B: A tech-mogul billionaire cage match is just the sort of inverted Hunger Games battle the world needs more of... I’m all for it!

  • With all the real and heavy issues going on in the world right now, it’s nice to know we can still enjoy simple things like watching two inexperienced ‘fighters’ make fools of themselves on TV. It’s okay to have some lightheartedness on social media every once in a while, people need to lighten up.

  • There have been mentions that the cage fight would have a charity component to it, with proceeds going towards a good cause. Plus, the viewing platforms could host betting, to go towards various social causes, it could be an entertaining way to give back. Even if you aren’t a fan of Musk or Zuck, you have to agree that a cage match between the two of them would likely bring in some serious $$$$.

  • Maybe more celebrities and influential people should battle it out in cage fights – imagine how many arguments it would solve? Just a whole lot of pent-up-energy and aggression, let out in the most primal way possible (especially given the whole Twitter vs. Threads rivalry).
